"Making Angels" - Fringe.

From Fox

Grade: A-

As I stated in my review of ”Forced Perspective” the writing team needed to step up their game & not just rehash story-lines for their procedurals & there is no doubt that ”Making Angels” is as original a procedural as ever & as well lays more amazing track for the season story arc. Early on in the episode we see the parallel universe Astrid crossing over to the prime universe to confront her prime self as a way to resolve the recent death of her farther. As well, we are introduced to a killer who is using some type of aerosol spray to take out his victims & what seems to be mysterious ties to the Observers. All this builds up to an amazing episode that leaves the room pretty dusty by a powerful performance from Jasika Nicole as the Astrids.

Astrid has always been an endearing character only made more-so by the appearance of her parallel self & ”Making Angels” finally gives both characters the story they deserve. As we open to the case & the appearance of parallel Astrid & soon to follow Fauxlivia we also see Peter’s increasing involvement into the Fringe teams cases. With Peter now on the scene Walter feels somewhat left out as his son takes charge & comes to the same conclusions he does in his lab. Walter is also left with the task of dealing with Fuaxlivia who he has not forgiven for her deception when she was guised as prime Olivia. As well the episode deals heavily with its killer Neal Chung, a mathematician who seems to have figured out time/space akin to that of the Observers & is using his knowledge to systematically relieve his victims of a future tragedy.

As ”Making Angels” weaves between both story-lines we see a large weight placed on death & its implications on character development in parallel universes & parallel lives. The team masterfully executes an episode that rivets one to the core of their basic interactions with loved ones & their daily lives. The difference between both universes us so well played out by the Astrids it reminds is that even the simplest things can have a huge impact on how each character has grown. Through them our Fringe teams learn that their differences aren’t so petty like that between Walter & Fauxlivia. As well, right at the season story arc takes another big move with that of the Observers & our ever present one September making this episode one of the best in the season.
