American Horror Story

From TV Guide

Grade: D

American Horror Story is the latest series by crazed man Ryan Murphy. By the title alone it is clear that he is departing from his high school “drama” & glee club sing-a-longs to delve back into his past of freak shows & over-drama character work. One would hope from a title like this that American Horror Story would add to the tome of horror that Americana has wrought but it just seems to borrow or blatantly rip-off, whichever way you would like to look at it, from established tropes of the genre. In the previews leading up to the series debut one thing stood out as something that I at least have a fear of, latex. That noise that latex makes when it rubs together unnerves me & it has nothing, surprisingly, to do with The Gimp from Pulp Fiction. As I was saying though, the bondage ghost thing, although seemingly original & horrifying, is one of the most tame things not only in the pilot but so far in the series. Lets just say that any kinky ideas one would have with latex are completely devoid from the show as the “creature” seems to only prefer a rather bland missionary. I digress however in not highlighting the ridiculous amount of drama brought on to the series to fill in when horror is not present. From caricatures that want to be archetypes to an increasingly moody Dylan McDermott. American Horror Story is nothing to salivate over & unless you want to get needlessly hooked to another Ryan Murphy series that will probably disappoint you in the end like Nip/Tuck did, I would stay clear.
