Miniature: “Pilot” - 2 Broke Girls.

From CBS

Grade: F

2 Broke Girls is the latest sitcom to come from CBS created by Whitney Cummings & starring bombshell Kat Dennings. The series centers around veteran diner waitress Max, played by Dennings, & now broke dilettante/new waitress Caroline, played by Beth Behrs, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. As soon as the episode starts we are delivered a joke at the expense of hipsters, with the but being about Coldplay for some reason, & a cheap joke about ejaculating. We are then thrown into the title sequence which includes hip camera filters & distressed typeface all while being delivered to us by the popular tune “Second Chance” by hip band Peter, Bjorn & John, which also serves as the interlude between scenes. If there was any song I could get tired of faster it would be hearing this songs same guitar riff every 30 seconds. The series continues to bring on more hipster jokes, tinged with popular bands like Arcade Fire, & unfunny jokes like one based off Arnold Schwarzenegger’s nanny situation & Caroline’s father being based off of Bernie Madoff. 2 Broke Girls brings the broad sitcom jokes & ‘laugh track audience’ that CBS is known for while still trying to be edgy & it fails miserably trying to distance itself from its very inherent hipster aesthetic. As endearing & cute as Dennings may be, this series lacks any originality as it grasps at too many straw all while denying its obvious stereotype.
