Plain and simple Louie takes us to some dark places
sometimes. The great thing about this
show is that it can interject some great comedy into its situations to diffuse
the awkward tension bombs that the show sets up. In “Eddie” we get no diffusion really, just a
lot of pain.
After a regular standup routine from Louie we follow him
backstage to run into his old friend Eddie.
Through a great black & white flashback we get to see a very young
Louie during his very early standup days meeting Eddie and becoming very good
friends with him due to their odd senses of humor. Back in “present day” we can easily see that
their relationship is strained to say the least. As we follow them on their odd journey
through the night and some more flashback interjections we really learn how
strained their relationship is and why.
Eddie felt that his need was to stick to his barely paid comedian routes
and it reflects like no other in his demeanor.
It’s hard not to feel bad for him if not for the fact that he will still
be a complete asshole to you no matter what.
What really hurts is that right from the start is the ominous feeling we
get from Eddie when he keeps telling Louie that he is going to do his last gig
in Maryland and that he will be out.
It’s not hard to, early-on, take a guess at what he is
talking about. What is so excruciating
is our wait for when Louie will finally realize what Eddie keeps trying to get
across to him. Through that wait we
follow the two through a wild journey in the night from liquor stores to hole
in the wall stand-up clubs. It’s
painful, it’s gut wrenching, it’s funny and it’s just so hard to watch at
times. Louie isn’t a show to shy away
from topics and it is a breath of fresh air to see that they won’t shy from
anything. Louis CK is one of the
funniest people currently around and he has gone a lot of places through his
journey in life. However dark “Eddie”
gets, and it gets pretty damn dark, it still is able to show us the unrenowned
beauty that we are a part of. At the end
of the episode if you don’t feel like going outside and taking a breath of
fresh air and maybe having a cigarette and a shot of whiskey to chase then
there is something wrong with you.
Grade: A+
Ed. Side Note:
Eddies comedy routine was pretty funny while at the same
time just making you feel so depressed.
Turns out Road Comics are called “Road Heads” which is good
to know.
