Warehouse 13 "Love Sick"

Grade: B

So this is probably a show a lot of you aren’t watching. Thats ok. Its on SyFy which most only put their time towards watching Ghost Hunters if they are truly bored. SyFy just doesn’t have that great of rep since we all know the types of movies they air. Thing is their series have gotten pretty well recognized lately. With the huge love for Battlestar Galactica and continued push for shows like Eureka its hard to deny that this network isn’t doing something right. Its television series are really spreading out in the spectrum for everyone and just having a central theme of something in the sci-fi vein. That is how I got hooked on Warehouse 13, well that and other reasons I will get to later.

What attracted me to this show from its inception was that it was created by Jane Espenson, famed writer on such shows as Dinosaurs & Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Although she had a hand in writing the first episode the series really bloomed on its own through its characters and their portrayals by the actors. This show just glowed with great chemistry no matter how dopey it could be at times. The premise of the show isn’t that out their for a sci-fi show and has that same great pull as shows like The X-Files. Our two main characters, Myka & Pete, scour the country looking for these things called artifacts which are just famous items from famous historical people that have come to poses spooky powers from their owners. They go out and retrieve these artifacts when they notice that they are being used and once retrieved store them in warehouse number 13 which houses many of these crazy things.

Love Sick works as a somewhat good starting point for those who have not seen the series and are just looking for one of those fun summer shows that doesn’t offer too much weight in it like certain other shows. Here we see that some artifact is causing people to turn to clay in Salt Lake City so fatherly character Artie heads out with our youth draw character Claudia. Meanwhile back at the warehouse the real fun of the episodes is seen with Pete & Myka waking up in Artie’s bed with Myka’s hair turned blonde and having no recollection of the previous night. Their fear of sleeping together leads them on the while journey of trying to figure out what happened the previous evening and what happened to their new partner Steve Jinks. There B story for the episode works well to introduce the types of artifacts found through the warehouse and show off the chemistry the characters/actors have with each other. Meanwhile in Salt Lake City we get the A story which involves more of the evolved story of the series and a little hint at this seasons arc.

The episode really shows off many of the strong points that work for this show as something very easy to digest. The series is one that has proved itself easy to pick up for the most part but where would the fun be if one didn’t suggest going back and watching episodes from the previous seasons. Outside of the tv staple of a touching ending that has occurred over the past two episodes, Love Sick, reminds us that there seems to be a new big bad in town and something very shady will most likely go down somewhat soon.
